Kirkendall effect
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003191
The phenomenon of unequal diffusion rates between two different atomic species across an interface, leading to a net flow of vacancies in one direction. This differential movement results in the formation of voids or pores on the side of the faster-diffusing species. It is observed in diffusion couples and affects the integrity of welded joints or coatings.
