Mole

A massive coastal engineering structure, built of stone, concrete, or earth, that extends from the shore into the water to serve as a breakwater or a pier. It protects a harbor or anchorage from waves and can also provide a roadway or berthing space for vessels. Unlike a jetty, which is primarily for directing currents, a mole's main function is wave protection.
