Mulch

A protective covering of organic or synthetic material spread over the ground, used in large-scale landscaping, agriculture, and erosion control. Common industrial bulk materials include wood chips, shredded bark, straw, or plastic sheeting, applied to retain soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and moderate soil temperature. The application rate is specified by volume or depth, with a typical layer for wood-based mulches being 2 to 4 inches deep.
