A unit of energy or work in the International System of Units (SI) equal to one billionth (10^-9) of a joule. This minute quantity of energy is relevant in fields such as microelectronics, nanotechnology, and biological systems where very small energy transfers occur. For instance, the energy consumed by a single transistor switching operation can be measured in nanojoules.
