Near field

The region immediately surrounding an antenna or other electromagnetic source, where the electromagnetic fields are complex and do not behave as simple propagating waves. In this region, reactive fields dominate, and the electric and magnetic field components are not in phase. The near field extends roughly one wavelength from the source.
