Nun's thread

A very fine, strong linen thread, bleached white and named for the nuns of Flanders, France and Italy who made it from about the 16th century. It was used for lacemaking and fine sewing. From the early 18th century it was also produced commercially in Scotland, notably at Paisley, where it was sold as ounce thread.
