A transparent sheet carrying text or artwork that is laid over a base image or mechanical so that elements such as a second color can be prepared separately and combined at reproduction. In letterpress make-ready, the word also names a piece of paper pasted on the tympan sheet to raise the pressure at one spot of the form and strengthen a weak impression. In digital prepress the equivalent is a layer in a design file.
