A hand-held leather and metal device worn by sailmakers and riggers to push large needles through heavy canvas, sailcloth, or rope. It consists of a leather strap that fits around the hand and a small, dimpled metal plate that sits in the palm, providing a surface to apply force to the needle's head. Palms are designated as either right-handed or left-handed and are an indispensable tool for traditional sail repair and ropework.
