Sacrificial anode
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005023
A highly active metal, such as zinc, magnesium, or aluminum, that is electrically connected to a more noble metal structure to prevent corrosion. The sacrificial anode corrodes preferentially, protecting the primary structure by acting as the anode in an electrochemical cell. This method, known as cathodic protection, is widely used for pipelines, ship hulls, and water heaters.
