Sandwich theory
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005047
A structural mechanics theory used to analyze the behavior of sandwich structures, which consist of a lightweight core bonded between two thin, stiff face sheets. This theory predicts the bending, buckling, and vibration characteristics of such composites by considering the different material properties and thicknesses of each layer. It is a specialized application of plate and shell theory, accounting for shear deformation in the core.
