An abbreviation for Standby Power System, an electrical system that provides backup power to a facility during a failure of the primary utility supply. It automatically detects a power outage and starts a generator or switches to a battery backup to power selected circuits. Unlike an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a standby system has a brief transfer time, causing a momentary interruption of power before the backup source engages.
