Scaffold

A build-up of partly fused burden, slag and metal on the inner wall of a blast furnace, which narrows the stack and disturbs the gas flow. A scaffold can make the charge hang in the furnace and then descend unevenly, and when it breaks away the burden may slip suddenly.
