Burden

The charge of raw materials fed into a blast furnace or other smelting furnace. This mixture consists of metallic ore (like iron ore), a fuel source and reducing agent (coke), and a flux (limestone). The specific proportions of these components are carefully calculated to produce metal of a desired quality and to form a liquid slag that removes impurities.
