Snifting valve
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005424
A type of automatic air valve, also known as a snifter valve, that allows air to enter or escape a pipeline or vessel to prevent a vacuum or relieve low levels of positive pressure. It opens automatically when the internal pressure drops below atmospheric pressure, admitting air to prevent collapse, and closes when the pressure equalizes or becomes positive. These valves are distinct from pressure relief valves, which are designed to vent high pressures to prevent rupture.
