Spill

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005523

A thick lath or pole driven forward into loose ground ahead of the timber sets already in place, so that the roof or sides are held while the level advances, or used in shaft sinking through loose strata to hold back the sides of the shaft. Each spill is driven over the last set so that the ground ahead is supported before it is dug out. It is also called a spile or forepole.
