Stop off

To apply a protective coating to specific areas of a metal part before a surface treatment process, such as carburizing or plating. This coating prevents the treated areas from undergoing the chemical or thermal changes intended for other parts of the workpiece. Common stop-off materials include copper plating, ceramic paints, or specialized lacquers.
