Subsistence crop
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005748
A plant cultivated by a farmer primarily to feed their own family and household, with little to no surplus for trade or sale. These crops are grown on a small scale with the main goal of self-sufficiency rather than generating income from market sales. Unlike cash crops, which are grown specifically for profit, subsistence crops such as maize, potatoes, or cassava directly meet the nutritional needs of the growers.
