Tax horsepower

A numerical rating assigned to an automobile engine for taxation purposes, calculated based on factors such as cylinder bore, number of cylinders, and sometimes stroke. This figure often bears little relation to the engine's actual power output. Many European countries used tax horsepower systems in the early to mid-20th century to determine vehicle registration fees.
