A unit of power, derived from the German 'Pferdestärke' (horsepower), commonly used in Europe for rating engine output. One PS is defined as the power required to lift a mass of 75 kilograms by one meter in one second. It is slightly less than one mechanical horsepower, with 1 PS approximately equal to 0.986 mechanical horsepower.
