The physical features of a land area, including its elevation, contours, and obstacles such as mountains, hills, and bodies of water. Pilots and air traffic controllers consider terrain when planning flight paths and maintaining safe altitudes. Terrain awareness systems provide warnings to pilots about proximity to the ground.
