Traverse table
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006162
A mathematical table listing the lengths of the sides of a right-angled triangle corresponding to a given angle and hypotenuse. Surveyors historically used these tables to simplify the calculation of latitude and departure for each leg of a traverse without direct use of trigonometric functions. For a given bearing and distance, the table provides the change in northing (latitude) and easting (departure), which are then summed to determine the coordinates of the next point.
