Untemper

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006368

To reverse the effects of tempering in a hardened metal, such as steel, by heating it to a specific temperature and then cooling it. This process softens the material, reduces its hardness and brittleness, and relieves internal stresses, making it more workable for subsequent operations. Untempering is accomplished by heating the steel above its upper critical temperature (A₃ or Acm) and then cooling it slowly, a process similar to full annealing.
