Water twist
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006538
A strong, hard-twisted cotton yarn first spun on the water frame, the roller-drafting machine patented by Richard Arkwright in 1769 and driven by a water wheel. Its strength suited it to warp threads, so British weavers could make all-cotton cloth instead of cotton weft on linen warp. The softer yarn from the spinning jenny was used for weft.
