Contact with a harmful substance or condition over a short duration, typically lasting less than 24 hours. In liability and workers' compensation insurance, this type of exposure is associated with immediate or rapidly developing health effects, such as chemical burns or poisoning from a single event. This contrasts with chronic exposure, which involves repeated contact over a long period and leads to gradually developing illnesses.
