Acute toxicity

The adverse effects that occur rapidly after a single or short-term exposure to a substance. These effects can range from mild irritation to severe illness or death, depending on the substance and the dose. Acute toxicity is often measured by the median lethal dose (LD50) or median lethal concentration (LC50) in toxicology studies.
