Biological magnification

The process by which the concentration of a toxic substance increases in organisms at successively higher trophic levels in a food chain. This occurs when organisms consume contaminated prey, accumulating the substance in their tissues over time. Persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals are common examples of substances that undergo biomagnification.
