Branch profits tax (BPT)

A tax imposed by the United States on the deemed dividend equivalent amount of a foreign corporation's U.S. branch earnings and profits that are not reinvested in the U.S. business. For foreign insurance companies operating through a U.S. branch, this tax applies to their effectively connected income. The BPT rate is generally 30% unless reduced by an applicable income tax treaty.
