Civil Rights Act of 1991
Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-000755
A United States federal law that amended several existing civil rights statutes to strengthen protections against employment discrimination. The act provided for the right to a jury trial in discrimination cases and introduced the possibility of compensatory and punitive damages for victims of intentional discrimination. It explicitly overturned several Supreme Court decisions that had made it more difficult for employees to prove that an employer's practices had a discriminatory impact.
