Collision damage waiver (CDW)

An optional agreement offered by rental car companies that relieves the renter of financial responsibility for damage to the rental vehicle in the event of a collision or theft. It is not technically insurance but rather a contractual waiver of the rental company's right to seek recovery from the renter. Many personal auto policies and credit cards offer similar coverage.
