Loss damage waiver (LDW)

An optional agreement offered by rental car companies that relieves the renter of financial responsibility for damage to or theft of the rental vehicle. It is not insurance but a contractual waiver of the rental company's right to collect for damages. The cost of an LDW varies by rental company and vehicle type.
