Maintenance, cure, and wages

A set of legal obligations owed by shipowners to seamen injured or falling ill while in service of the vessel, regardless of fault. 'Maintenance' covers living expenses ashore, 'cure' covers medical expenses, and 'wages' covers earnings until the end of the voyage or contract. These entitlements are distinct from workers' compensation and are governed by maritime law, such as the Jones Act.
