Out-of-pocket limit (OOP)

The maximum amount of money an insured individual will have to pay for covered healthcare services in a policy year before their health insurance plan begins to pay 100% of the allowed amount. This limit includes deductibles, co-payments, and co-insurance, but typically excludes premiums. Once this limit is reached, the insurer covers all further eligible medical expenses for the remainder of the year.
