Point of service (POS) plan

A type of managed care health insurance plan that combines characteristics of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and preferred provider organizations (PPOs). Members choose a primary care physician within the plan's network who refers them to specialists. They can also seek care outside the network, but at a higher cost.
