Reporting lag

The period of time between the occurrence of an insured event and the date it is reported to the insurer. This delay can vary significantly depending on the type of claim and the policyholder's awareness of the loss. Actuaries account for reporting lag when estimating incurred but not reported (IBNR) reserves.
