Abate

To reduce, decrease, or completely eliminate something, such as a nuisance, a tax, or a legacy in a will. In property law, a public or private nuisance may be abated through a court order requiring the responsible party to stop the offending activity. In estate law, abatement occurs when the assets of an estate are insufficient to pay all debts and legacies, forcing a proportional reduction of gifts to beneficiaries according to statutory or testamentary rules.
