Actual controversy

A genuine dispute between adverse parties that is ripe for judicial resolution, rather than a hypothetical or abstract disagreement. Courts require an actual controversy to exist before they will exercise jurisdiction, preventing them from issuing advisory opinions. This requirement is rooted in Article III of the U.S. Constitution, limiting federal judicial power.
