Advisory opinion

A non-binding statement of legal interpretation issued by a court or other body, offering guidance on a legal question without involving an actual case or controversy. Federal courts in the United States are prohibited from issuing advisory opinions due to the 'case or controversy' requirement of Article III of the Constitution. Some state courts and international tribunals, however, may issue them.
