Ademption
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-000356
A doctrine in estate law under which a specific gift of property in a will becomes void if that property is no longer part of the testator's estate when they die. This occurs because the item was sold, destroyed, or given away before the testator's death. Ademption applies only to specific bequests, such as a particular piece of jewelry, and not to general bequests, like a sum of money.
