Alien Tort Statute

A United States federal law granting district courts jurisdiction over civil actions brought by an alien for a tort committed in violation of the law of nations or a treaty of the United States. Enacted in 1789, this statute has been invoked in cases involving human rights abuses abroad. Its application has been significantly narrowed by Supreme Court rulings.
