Black letter law

The well-established, fundamental principles of law that are accepted by a majority of jurisdictions and are not subject to reasonable dispute. These core rules and legal doctrines are often presented in bold 'blackletter' type in legal treatises and restatements of the law. This concept contrasts with unsettled or developing areas of law where legal opinions and judicial interpretations diverge.
