The financial assets or the financial value of assets, such as cash, machinery, and equipment, owned by an individual or business. In a legal context, it is distinguished from income and is subject to different rules regarding taxation, distribution in estates, and division in corporate law. For example, a trust may distribute income to a beneficiary while preserving the capital for a remainderman.
