Citizen's arrest

An arrest made by a private individual, rather than a law enforcement officer, of a person seen committing a crime or reasonably suspected of committing a felony. The authority for this action is circumscribed by law and varies significantly between jurisdictions, dictating the circumstances under which it is permitted.
