Civil union

A legal status that provides many of the same rights, benefits, and responsibilities to same-sex couples as marriage, but without the designation of marriage itself. It was often created as an alternative to marriage for same-sex couples before marriage equality became widespread. The legal recognition and scope of civil unions vary by jurisdiction.
