Void marriage

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005177

A marriage that is invalid from its inception and creates no marital status, because the law forbids the union. Typical grounds are bigamy, where a prior marriage still exists, and incest, where the spouses are too closely related. Unlike a voidable marriage, it cannot be ratified by the spouses' later conduct, although a court ruling is usually sought to settle property and status.
