Annulment
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-000515
A legal procedure that declares a marriage null and void, as if it never legally existed. Unlike a divorce, which ends a valid marriage, an annulment establishes that the marriage was invalid from its inception due to certain impediments, such as fraud, bigamy, or incapacity. The grounds for annulment vary by jurisdiction but typically involve a defect in the formation of the marriage contract.
