Relating to the rights and duties of individuals and organizations in their interactions with each other, as distinct from criminal, military, or political affairs. This area of law governs disputes between private parties, such as those involving contracts, property, family matters, and torts, where the remedy sought is monetary damages or an injunction. Unlike criminal law, which involves prosecution by the state, civil litigation is initiated by a private plaintiff seeking to enforce a private right.
