Clean hands doctrine

An equitable principle asserting that a party seeking relief in a court of equity must not have engaged in any misconduct related to the subject matter of the lawsuit. If the plaintiff has acted improperly, the court may refuse to grant the requested equitable remedy, even if the defendant also acted wrongly. This doctrine prevents a party from profiting from their own wrongdoing.
