Corruption

The abuse of entrusted power for private gain, involving illegal or unethical acts by a person in a position of authority. It includes bribery, extortion, fraud, embezzlement, and nepotism, where an official solicits or accepts a benefit in exchange for performing or omitting an official act. Federal prosecution of public corruption is primarily based on statutes such as the Hobbs Act, which criminalizes extortion under color of official right, and the federal bribery statute, 18 U.S.C. § 201.
