Color of law

The appearance of a legal right or authority that does not actually exist. An action is taken under color of law when a person, such as a police officer or other government official, uses the power granted by their position to willfully deprive another person of their constitutional rights. Civil rights lawsuits under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 require the plaintiff to prove that the defendant acted under color of state law.
