Degree of kinship

A measure of the closeness of a familial relationship between two individuals, determined by counting the number of generational steps separating them from a common ancestor. This calculation is used in intestacy laws to determine the order of inheritance when a person dies without a will. Civil law and common law systems employ different methods for computing degrees of kinship.
